2000 Crop Walk for the Hungry

WALK RESULTS:

We had a spectacularly beautiful fall sunny, crisp day for our 20th CROP Walk! Moreover, we were very successful, as 294 walkers from 29 faith communities, two schools, and one cub scout troop raised a record of about $32,300! These funds raised will support the third world community self-help programs of Church World Service, and will enable CWS to provide refugee relief in trouble areas like East Timor and Kosovo and also relief for disasters like very recent floods in India (www.churchworldservice.org). In addition, one quarter of these funds raised will provide substantial contributions to the five local supper/food pantry programs supported by the Walk — Open Table, Community Supper, Sudbury Food Pantry, Agape Center, and Bedford Community Table/Pantry.

We were again very fortunate to have excellent music at the walk. We give many thanks to the Maynard High School Jazz Band, led by Cindy Erickson, for playing very lively, beautiful music again this year before the walk. We all thoroughly enjoyed their music, as most of us came early to enjoy their entire performance.

Eight church or school youth groups displayed and paraded attractive banners at the start of the walk, with the Middle School Youth Group from First Church of Christ Bedford winning first place and receiving a pizza dinner award. Many thanks to the participating youth groups for their colorful and clever designs. The other participating youth groups were from West Acton Baptist Church; United Church of Christ; Boxborough - senior high youth, Acton Boxborough H.S. Community Outreach; Nashoba Brooks School, Concord; Our Lady of Fatima, Sudbury; Union Congregational Church, Maynard; and First Parish Church, Groton.

This year 27 walkers joined the 20 Plus Club and received a free T-shirt, a cap, or a bag for their successful efforts. Four youth from Acton Congregational; three walkers from Union Congregational in Maynard; and two from Memorial Congregational, Sudbury United Methodist, West Acton Baptist won 20+ awards. After the walk, many youth took part in the Art Contest in the parish hall. The winning design will be on next year's new T-shirt.
